new puppy information sheet
Congratulations on your new puppy!
1. EatingFood: Royal Canin Poodle Puppy dry food —it is hard to find so the Small/Petit Royal Canin will work too. Little Caesars and Royal Canin Puppy wet food. They drink a lot of water and sometimes play in their water too. Table scraps and home cooked food. Eggs, Doggy Meat Loaf, Steak, pieces of chicken—with no bone. They also like bits of green beans, pumpkin, carrots, and peas. Cornbread or bread to replace the grain. Beggin Strips, Greenies, and Milk Bones for treats.
Eating Schedule: We keep dry food out for them all of the time. I know they say this is not the best way—however, Ihave heard too many stories of pups getting to the whole bag of dog food and gorging themselves sick. This way finding the bag of dog food, isn’t a big deal. Also, they need to access to water 24/7. I usually give them each 1-2 cans of wet food per day depending on their appetite.
2. New House Transition:
Included with your puppy is a Binky (blanket, toy, etc.) smells like Moma and Siblings for comfort and security. Don’t wash it for at least a month.
3. Health:
On the inside of your folder, you will find their shot record. Please take your pup to the vet within 1-week and don’t take to dog parks or pet stores or anywhere other dogs have been until your pup has had all of the booster shots. Your pups will also need to be started on heartworm and flea prevention and depending on which one your vet uses, may also need an additional dewormer.
4. Microchip & AKC Registration: Microchip: Have your vet verify microchip number and record it. Your puppy has a Home Again Temperature Scan Microchip, you will need to purchase a scanner to be able to take his temperature. They are available on the internet, message me for a link. If you register with Home Again, there is an annual fee, if you register the microchip # with the AKC there is a 1 time fee. PLEASE REGISTER YOUR MICROCHIP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to ensure safety of your poodle. You will need to register the microchip number with the AKC (Instructions are within the AKC Folder). This is how you can prove he belongs to you and also how they can find you if he is ever lost or stolen and turns up at a shelter or vets office. AKC Registration: Instructions are within your AKC Folder. Please complete the AKC Registration process as soon as possible to ensure your puppy is registered. 5. Poodle Safety Agreement: If for any reason you cannot keep your pup, you agree to call us (304-921-2227 OR 304-921-2228) and we will come pickup the poodle. At that time you will surrender the pup back to us along with the AKC papers. DO NOT LET YOUR PUPPY END UP IN A SHELTER. 6. Grooming: General Grooming Tips: Poodles hair grows very fast and can be a problem around their behind. You should get a set of good clippers and trim their bottom about once a week to prevent what we call “shitty butt”. Check for this daily and wash their bottom under warm water and use conditioner if this happens. You need to brush every day. Poodles need to have the hair inside their ears plucked, this is painful, you can do it yourself, have your vet do it or a good groomer. Also, wait until all shots are complete before taking to a groomer and be sure to background check your groomer. Groomimg Products: I use Chris Christenson shampoo, conditioner and leave in spray. Bio Cream for eye stain prevention. You need to brush every day, I use the Amazon Grooming Set.
